The Ministry of Transport has planned to construct a new airport on the Samui Island in the southern province of Surat Thani to serve increasing number of tourists visiting the resort island.

Deputy Transport Minister Vichet Kasemthongsri told reporters here that the Ministry of Transport was conducting an environment impact report on the plan.

If results of the study are positive, the Ministry of Transport will propose the plan to the cabinet for further consideration and actions, he stated.

Vichet said that construction of the new airport on the Samui Island had become necessary due to increasing number of tourists visiting the resort island.

The existing Samui Airport can accommodate only about 2,000 of visitors, but the number of tourists visiting the Samui Island and using the airport has reached about 4,000-5,000, he noted. (TNA)–E002
