The above visas are all valid for 30 days and in case people want to stay longer it’s possible to extend the visa at an immigration office within the country or pay a 3 Usd / day fee for overstay.

The government of Myanmar announced visa-free offers for tourists from Hong Kong and Macao - joining the visa free offers for tourists from Japan and South Korea in a move to attract more Asian tourism into the country.

This new visa rules will be in place from 1 October 2018 and passport holders from these nationalities can board a plane to visit Myanmar without making any prior visa arrangements. On arrival no payment or proof of pre-arrangements is needed.

The government will also be granting Chinese nationals from mainland China for visas-on-arrival (VOA) at Yangon International Airport, Mandalay International Airport and Nay Pyi Taw International Airport. This means that also for these passport holders no pre-arranged approval is needed and on arrival they can apply for a visa which will be granted instantly. The fees for the visa on arrival is 50 Usd

In early September, government allowed all nationalities to enter Myanmar through the two overland borders: Tamu and Rih Khaw Dar and continue to travel overland to Thailand and use any of the four Thailand borders to exit Myanmar.  These 2 border points offer easy access for further exploring in Chin State, Sagaing Division and onwards to places like Mandalay and Bagan.  Apply easily online for an entry visa through these borders and you can expect to have the visa approved within 3 days.  Over landers who want to pass through Myanmar with their own motorized vehicle still need to apply for a “caravan permit” at the Ministry of hotel & Tourism as Myanmar is not an official “carnet country”.

The above visas are all valid for 30 days and in case people want to stay longer it’s possible to extend the visa at an immigration office within the country or pay a 3 Usd / day fee for overstay.

In 2017, Yangon airport recorded 1,139,166 arrivals of which 95,908 were from Japan, 63,612 from Korea and 143,037 from China.  When visa-free travel was introduced to some other countries (Singapore. Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines and Vietnam, the tourism industry in Myanmar witnessed an increase of arrival from those nationals.

Myanmar Tourism Marketing has been organized road shows, trade shows and media Fam trip for journalists, TV producers and digital marketing influencers from Japan, South Korea and China.  Visa-free and visa on arrival entry for those nationals would encourage an even more growth as there appears to be strong demand for travel to Myanmar.
