The Maldives records over 100,000 tourist arrivals in August 2024, reflecting a strong growth trajectory for the nation’s tourism sector. According to the Ministry of Tourism’s latest statistics, 109,415 tourists arrived at Velana International Airport (VIA) between August 1 and 17, marking a 14.9% increase compared to the same period last year.
This growth is even more significant when compared to the 81,695 arrivals recorded during the same period in 2022. On average, 6,436 tourists are visiting the Maldives daily in August 2024, with an average stay of eight days.
The Maldives has consistently demonstrated resilience and appeal as a top global travel destination. The increase in arrivals during August is a testament to the country’s ongoing efforts to attract a diverse range of tourists. This surge is part of a broader trend, as the Maldives welcomed 1,292,472 tourists between January 1 and August 17, 2024—a 10.4% rise from the previous year.
China remains the leading source market, contributing 14.3% of total arrivals with 184,632 tourists by August 17. Russia follows closely, contributing 10.8% of the market share with 139,308 arrivals, while the United Kingdom ranks third with 112,656 arrivals, accounting for 8.7% of the market share.
Other significant markets include Italy (7.4%), Germany (7.1%), and India (6%). Notably, Spain has recently entered the top 10 source markets, contributing 2% with 25,369 arrivals, replacing Poland.
The Maldives’ ambition to welcome two million tourists in 2024 is well within reach, following a successful 2023 when 1.8 million visitors were recorded. The tourism sector continues to thrive, driven by strategic efforts to diversify and explore new markets.
Tourism in the Maldives has been a key economic driver since its introduction in 1972. Over the past 52 years, the nation has captivated travelers with its stunning beauty, offering a unique and idyllic getaway. As the Maldives continues to attract a growing number of visitors, the future looks promising for the country’s tourism industry.
The Maldives’ tourism industry is not only focused on increasing arrival numbers but also on enhancing the overall visitor experience, ensuring that the nation remains a preferred destination for travelers worldwide. As we move further into 2024, the Maldives is on track to achieve another record-breaking year in tourism, reinforcing its status as a premier global destination.
