Chinese Tourist Arrivals to Cambodia

Chinese tourist arrivals to Cambodia rose 43.1% year-on-year in the first five months of 2024, reaching 326,003 visitors. This surge marks a significant boost for Cambodia’s tourism sector.

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Cambodia surged by 43.1 percent year-on-year in the first five months of 2024, according to a report released by the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism on Tuesday. This significant increase underscores the robust recovery and growing appeal of Cambodia as a prime destination for Chinese travelers.

A total of 326,003 Chinese visitors journeyed to Cambodia between January and May this year, a notable rise from the 227,747 tourists recorded during the same period in 2023. This surge in arrivals accounted for 12.3 percent of the total international tourists to Cambodia, reflecting the kingdom’s growing popularity among global travelers.

Overall, Cambodia welcomed 2.64 million foreign visitors in the first five months of 2024, marking a 22 percent increase from the 2.16 million international guests over the same timeframe last year. Among the international tourists, China emerged as the third largest source market, following Thailand and Vietnam.

Cambodian Tourism Minister Sok Soken expressed optimism about the continued rise in Chinese tourist numbers, attributing this positive trend to the Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchange Year 2024 initiative launched in January. “The future of Cambodia’s tourism is inseparable from the inflows of Chinese tourists and investors,” Soken remarked during a martial arts performance event titled “When Shaolin Meets Bokator at Angkor” held at the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap province in April.

Minister Soken also highlighted the strategic partnership between Cambodia and China, emphasizing that China is considered a critical market for Cambodia’s economic growth and development. The influx of Chinese tourists not only boosts the tourism sector but also contributes to broader economic and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

As Cambodia continues to recover and grow its tourism industry post-pandemic, the sustained interest from Chinese tourists is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the sector’s future trajectory. The significant increase in tourist arrivals is a testament to Cambodia’s efforts to enhance its appeal and connectivity, making it a key destination for travelers worldwide.
