Held annually, IRMMW-THz 2024 will mark 12 years since the conference was last held in Australia.

Today, Business Events Perth has announced that Perth has been chosen as the host city for the 49th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves 2024 (IRMMW-THz 2024), the world’s largest gathering devoted to the field of ultra-high frequency electronics and applications.

Held annually, IRMMW-THz 2024 will mark 12 years since the conference was last held in Australia.

The successful bid will see over 600 delegates from around the world attend the six-day conference and was led by Associate Professor Vincent Wallace from The University of Western Australia in partnership with Business Events Perth, Arinex and Tourism Australia, who supported the bid through their Business Events Bid Fund Program.

It is estimated that the event will deliver more than $3 million in direct economic contribution to the Western Australian economy.

Western Australian Tourism Minister David Templeman said the State Government was thrilled the conference is returning to Australia and specifically Perth.

“We can’t wait to welcome the 49th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves 2024 to our beautiful State, and I encourage delegates to extend their stay and venture into our diverse regions to experience everything Western Australia has to offer,” Minister Templeman said.

“Business events are an important part of the Western Australian economy, bringing high yielding visitors to the State, which is why the McGowan Government funds organisations like Business Events Perth, through Tourism WA, to bid and secure major conferences and exhibitions for our thriving State.”

“IRMMW-THz 2024 is an exciting opportunity to showcase the research being conducted in Western Australia, and exchange scientific and technical knowledge,” Western Australian Health, Medical Research and Science Minister Roger Cook said.

Business Events Perth chief executive Gareth Martin said Western Australia had put forward a compelling bid to the International Society of Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves.

“Our expertise in bidding for international business events, combined with Western Australia’s excellence in the field, and our strong bid chair Associate Professor Wallace ensured that Perth was the preeminent choice,” Mr Martin said.

Tourism Australia supported the bid to bring this event back to Australia through their Business Events Bid Fund Program.

“This is a great win for Perth and Australia, and we are thrilled to support conferences such as this one through Tourism Australia’s Bid Fund Program," Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said.

"The return of this conference to Australia in 2024 highlights Australia’s expertise in this knowledge sector and ensures our continued appeal as a world-class business events destination amongst global decision-makers.”

The IRMMW-THz conference has played a major role in bringing together international researchers in many diverse fields, from space science to nuclear fusion and, recently chemistry and biology.

“We are delighted that the International Organising committee have voted Perth as the city to hold the 49th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves in 2024,” Bid Chair Associate Professor Vincent Wallace said.

“Not only did they recognise Perth and Western Australia as a fantastic place to visit, but also the strength and depth of the scientific community here, and the importance of international networking and collaboration.”

The committee was most impressed with the commitment and support from the city itself, Business Events Perth and Arinex.”
