BANGKOK – In a significant development for Thailand’s tourism sector, Thapanee Kiatphaibool has been appointed as the new governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), effective from September 1. The decision was unanimously approved by the TAT board after a rigorous selection process led by the nomination subcommittee, which commenced recruitment proceedings on February 20.

Thapanee’s nomination was backed by the subcommittee, headed by Arrun Boonchai, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The selection criteria emphasized administrative proficiency, extensive knowledge of the tourism industry, and a strong background in marketing.

Expressing her gratitude for the opportunity, the newly appointed TAT governor pledged to maintain the tourism promotion policies implemented by her predecessor, Yuthasak Supasorn, ensuring a seamless transition. Once her appointment is officially confirmed, Thapanee plans to unveil her strategic vision for collaborative tourism promotional plans with the private sector.

Thapanee has been an integral part of the TAT since 1999, joining the organization after completing her master’s degree in science from the University of Surrey in the UK. Throughout her tenure, she has held various roles within the agency and presently serves as the deputy governor for domestic marketing.

Notably, Thapanee played a pivotal role during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic. She spearheaded the initiation of the ground-breaking Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA) certification program. This program established specific health and safety standards for hotels and services, becoming a mandatory requirement for hotels seeking registration as quarantine facilities during periods of stringent Covid-19 control measures.
