Awarded recognition for green initiatives in environment management of organic & food waste.
Mumbai’s GVK Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL), the company that manages the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), has won the ‘Gold’ plaque at the ‘ACI Asia-Pacific Green Airport recognition 2018’ award ceremony held in Narita, Japan on 24th April, 2018 in the over 35 million passenger per annum category.
The award was presented by ACI for the green initiatives taken by Mumbai Airport in environment management of organic and food waste.
MIAL presented its best waste management practices, highlighted by a unique case study of 1MT/day capacity organic waste composting plant with solar power installation on roof top along with its allied benefits of generating organic compost for in-house application, offsetting of Green House Gas emissions due to avoidance of landfill and by using green power for its operation. In fact, sustainability is at the helm of all projects and initiatives that are undertaken at GVK MIAL.
An overwhelming achievement, this award is a testament of the unswerving commitment shown by the company towards the ideology of holistic and sustainable development. The construction of Terminal 2 was also designed in accordance with green building guidelines from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). The airport design too, was envisioned keeping in mind the environmental impact of such a vast structure.
The airport makes optimum utilization of available resources through maximizing use of natural light, recycling of water, recycling of organic waste, generating solar power and also has been a silent airport irrespective of its quantum of functioning.
Previously, GVK MIAL became the proud recipient of Level 3+ Carbon Neutrality certification by Airports Council International (ACI), the global authority of international airports. CSIA achieved this highest ACA level of Neutrality in recognition of its GHG management initiatives with greater awareness and sensitization of the stakeholders towards the airport industry’s response to the challenge of climate change.
In addition to this, GVK MIAL was also presented with the prestigious ‘Gold’ certification at the ‘GreenCo Summit’ 2016 and the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) ‘Platinum’ Certification in 2016. GVK MIAL became the first Indian airport to hold the platinum rating within the Existing Building (O&M) Rating System for its environmentally sustainable profile. Recently, the airport also received the Emerson Cup 2017 at the prestigious Green Building Congress held recently.
