The SATCC’s “Safari Masquerade” Ball celebrated South African culture with gourmet cuisine, music, and vibrant animal-themed décor.
BANGKOK, THAILAND – The South African-Thai Chamber of Commerce (SATCC) hosted the much-anticipated bi-annual South Africa Ball on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the prestigious Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel. Themed “Safari Masquerade,” this year’s event dazzled attendees with an unforgettable evening filled with an African flair, gourmet cuisine and entertainment.
The luxurious ballroom was transformed into a vibrant tribute to the African wilderness, featuring a dramatic showcase of the continent’s famed wildlife, with guests donning elaborate animal masks and opulent attire. The evening’s culinary offerings were a true celebration of South African culture, with highlights including Lamb Potjiekos Bunny Chow, Beef Boerewors, and the ever-popular Bobotie, all expertly paired with wines provided by KWV.
“Tonight was a true testament to the cultural ties between South Africa and Thailand,” said SATCC Chairman Neil van Heerden. “The evening was not only a celebration of the diversity and richness of South African culture but also an opportunity to strengthen business connections within the vibrant Thai-South African community.”
The night concluded with partygoers dancing into the early hours, DJ 2C taking us on a journey of South African dance and house music and more.

Andrew J Wood was born in Yorkshire England, he is a former hotelier, Skalleague and travel writer. Andrew has 48 years of hospitality and travel experience. Educated at Batley Grammar School and a hotel graduate of Napier University, Edinburgh. Andrew started his career in London, working with various hotels. His first posting overseas was with Hilton International, in Paris, and he later arrived in Asia in 1991 on Bangkok with his appointment as Director of Marketing at the Shangri-La Hotel and has remained in Thailand ever since. Andrew has also worked with the Royal Garden Resort Group now Anantara (Vice President) and the Landmark Group of Hotels (Vice President of Sales and Marketing). Latterly he has been the General Manager at the Royal Cliff Group of Hotels in Pattaya and the Chaophya Park Hotel Bangkok & Resorts.
A past board member and Director of Skål International (SI), a former National President with SI Thailand and a two time past President of the Bangkok Club. Andrew is the former President of Skål Asia. In 2019, Andrew was awarded SKÅL’s highest award the distinction of Membre D’Honneur.
He is a regular guest lecturer at various Universities in Asia.
