Content platforms on the rise

Based on RedSeer’s findings, Hotstar has the largest MAU (300 Mn) followed by Dailyhunt (190 Mn) and MX Player (176 Mn).

Bangalore, India — RedSeer Consulting, a Bangalore based research and consulting firm, has revealed the Monthly Active User numbers for 15 content players in Indian industry. It includes News Aggregators and Shortform Content, OTT Video and Music streaming players.

Based on RedSeer’s findings, Hotstar has the largest MAU (300 Mn) followed by Dailyhunt (190 Mn) and MX Player (176 Mn). Chinese video streaming player, Tik Tok, which has been controversial due to its content, is fourth at 129 Mn. Gaana is the largest when it comes to Audio streaming (at 110 Mn) followed by Saavn (acquired by Jio) at 92 Mn.

“Nothing unites our country like cricket. Every time there is a World Cup or any other sizeable cricket tournament, we see very high activity on these content platforms; people don’t just want to watch matches, they also want to read and talk about it,” says Ujjwal Chaudhry, Director, RedSeer Consulting.

As RedSeer has published in the past, Facebook and Google currently account for 80% of digital ad market but the growth in new-age content platforms will lead to a shift in the market shares towards these new-age content platforms esp in vernacular space.
