These findings were uncovered by Brand Expedia’s 2018 Vacation Deprivation Study, which also found that more Singaporeans are deprived of vacations compared to the year before, with 77 percent expressing a willingness to take a pay cut for an extra day of vacation.
Singapore – Brand Expedia today released findings from its 2018 Vacation Deprivation Study, which revealed that vacation deprivation is on the rise among full-time workers in Singapore. Over six in 10 Singaporeans (63%) said that they are deprived of vacations in 2018, up from 57% in 2017 and 41% in 2016, bumping Singapore up by one spot to become the sixth most vacation-deprived market in the world. At the same time, sentiments of vacation deprivation are increasing at a more rapid rate in Singapore as compared to the global average. 58% of full-time workers around the globe said that they are deprived of vacations in 2018, up from 53% in 2017 and 49% in 2016 (Fig 1).
The Brand Expedia 2018 Vacation Deprivation Study, which was conducted with 11,000 full-time working adults across 19 markets, including 300 respondents in Singapore, also uncovered full-time workers’ sentiments on whether the number of vacation days they receive is adequate for today’s working environment. Almost nine in 10 (88%) Singaporeans felt that they deserve more vacation days in 2018 – up from the 76% who felt the same in 2017. Additionally, 77% of Singapore workers even expressed a willingness to take a pay cut for one extra day of vacation.

Singapore Ranked the Sixth Most Vacation-Deprived Market in the World
In the midst of growing vacation deprivation sentiments all across the globe, Asia Pacific stood out as the most vacation-deprived region in the world. Seven in 10 of the most vacation-deprived markets came from Asia Pacific, led by India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Markets such as India and Thailand also registered the biggest jumps in vacation deprivation sentiments of 15% and 14% respectively this year. This was followed by the United States, which registered the third largest increase of 9%, while Singapore came in fourth with an increase of 6% in vacation deprivation sentiments over 2017 (Fig 2).
Delving into the age-specific differences in vacation deprivation sentiments among full-time workers in Singapore, the Study revealed that younger workers aged between 18 to 34 exuded higher levels of vacation deprivation sentiments compared to older workers. 67% of Singaporean workers aged 18 to 34 said that they are deprived of vacations, compared to 65% of workers aged 35 to 49 and the 52% of workers aged 50 and above who shared the same sentiments.
Singaporeans Remain Connected to Work Even During Vacations
Looking at the vacation behaviours of full-time workers in Singapore, the Study found that half of the Singaporean workers surveyed take fewer days of annual leave than the amount that they receive in a year. When asked about the reasons for not taking time off for a holiday, being unable to get time off work emerged as the top reason for doing so among 39% of Singaporeans - the highest in the world. This was followed by reasons such as the desire to save up time for a long holiday (30%) and being unable to afford a holiday (22%).
Even when Singaporeans go on holidays, more than half (53%) admitted that they tend to stay connected to work during their vacation time, with 79% checking emails or voicemail at least once, out of which 27% do so at least once a day while on vacation. On top of that, Singaporeans also felt an expectation to be available constantly by their colleagues while on their break, with 30% saying that they are expected to be available constantly by their supervisors – the third highest percentage globally after India and Malaysia.
Vacations Continue to be Important for Workers’ Well-Being
When reviewing the impact of vacations on the well-being of Singaporean workers, the Study revealed that vacations play a crucial role in improving their professional well-being. 86% of Singaporean workers said that they return to work with a more positive attitude, 85% said that they return more focused, while 84% said that they are more productive.
In addition, respondents also agreed that vacations have a positive impact on their personal well-being:
- 92% felt that a vacation gives them a chance to hit the "reset" button on stress and anxiety;
- 91% felt that regular vacations are important for their general health and well-being, and help them feel better connected to friends and family;
- 89% said that they feel rejuvenated and have a better outlook on life following a vacation.
Taking Mental Health Days a Growing Trend in Singapore and Asia Pacific
As a more recent trend, findings from the Study indicated that Singaporeans are placing greater importance on their mental health. 70 percent of Singaporeans have taken at least one mental health day in the past year, the fifth highest percentage in the world after India (86 percent), Thailand (76 percent), Italy (75 percent) and Malaysia (74 percent). On average, Singaporeans took 3 mental health days last year and an additional 2.8 days on average for life administration.
