China launches a new bullet train from Chengdu to Jiuzhai Valley, enhancing accessibility to UNESCO sites and boosting regional tourism.
CHENGDU, CHINA – A new milestone in China‘s expansive rail network was reached with the launch of a new railway section in southwest China, introducing direct bullet train services to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jiuzhai Valley. This development marks a significant enhancement in accessibility to one of China’s most celebrated natural treasures.
The new bullet train service, which commenced on Friday, now connects Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, to Jiuzhai Valley in just 1 hour and 39 minutes. Previously, travelers had to endure either a turbulent flight or a lengthy and often uncomfortable coach journey to reach this scenic area. The introduction of this high-speed service is expected to revolutionize travel to the region, making it far more convenient and appealing to both domestic and international tourists.
In addition to providing access to Jiuzhai Valley, the new rail line also links travelers to another UNESCO World Heritage Site — the Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area. Known for its stunning mountain landscapes, diverse forest ecosystems, and unique limestone formations, Huanglong is a natural wonder that draws visitors from around the world. The improved connectivity between these two iconic sites is likely to enhance the region’s appeal as a top-tier tourist destination.
The new railway section is part of the broader Sichuan-Qinghai railway, a project that spans approximately 836 km and is designed to support trains traveling at speeds of up to 200 km per hour. The construction of this segment was particularly challenging due to the dramatic elevation changes and the necessity of navigating three fault zones. Workers faced numerous obstacles, including rock bursts, toxic gases, and high ground temperatures, which made the project a remarkable engineering feat.
Mu Yalin, one of the designers of the railway, highlighted the significance of the new section in connecting these world-renowned natural sites to China’s vast and ever-growing rail network. The project not only enhances accessibility but also underscores China’s commitment to expanding its transportation infrastructure in support of tourism and economic development.
Jiuzhai Valley, also known as Jiuzhaigou National Park, is famed for its breathtaking waterfalls, lush forests, serene plateau lakes, and striking karst rock formations. Located on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, it is one of China’s most acclaimed tourist destinations. In the first seven months of this year alone, Jiuzhai Valley welcomed 86,000 foreign visitors, nearly nine times the number from the same period last year. This surge in international tourism underscores the growing global interest in the region.
Experts believe that the new rail line will further boost tourist access to both Huanglong and Jiuzhai scenic areas, significantly contributing to the local economy. The enhanced connectivity is expected to attract even more visitors, fostering economic growth in the surrounding communities.
China’s railway network, which spanned 159,000 km by the end of 2023, continues to play a pivotal role in the country’s tourism industry. With the introduction of services like the new Chengdu to Jiuzhai Valley bullet train, tourist trains are becoming an increasingly popular mode of travel, offering convenience, speed, and comfort for those eager to explore China’s diverse landscapes.
