How to Participate to ‘Destination Portrait’

Do you want your destination to appear to this column and offer valuable hints and tips to thousands of travel agents? Do you want to train sales staff of the big tour operators on how to sell your destination better?

“Destination Portrait” is a ‘how to sell’ special column which aims to fulfill the travel agents’ need for information. Local Tourism Authorities and National Tourism Oranisations can provide useful hints and tips to travel agents, thus helping them to better sell the destination as well as providing them with all the practical tips that they need to know in order to better inform their customers.

To participate in the “Destination Portrait” series, each destination should provide the following information:
Introduction: Short profile (+history) of the destination and its strategy in tourism.

  1. How to Access (Distances, Airports, airlines, rail, road…)
  2. Unique Selling Points (Attractions, nature, landmarks, unique features…)
  3. Marketing Ideas (Segmentation of the tourism product and selling tips, i.e. the destination is ideal for bird watching… selling tips: a)….. , b)…… , etc.)
  4. What to Avoid (Weaknesses, i.e.: destination is not suitable for…, don’t expect to find…, avoid…)
  5. Types of Accommodation (Hotels and other unique lodging types, standards, classification system, architecture, number of beds per type of accommodation, etc.)
  6. How to get around (Local transportation, fares, transfers, etc.)
  7. Gastronomy (Characteristics of local cuisine, traditional ingredients, famous recipes, local wines and spirits… etc.)
  8. Shopping (Handicrafts, brands, local products… etc.)
  9. Festivals & Events (Important cultural or other type of events, exhibitions, congresses etc.)
  10. Seasonality & Climate (High/low season, best/worst period)
  11. Looking into the Future (Tourism development, future plans, investment opportunities)
  12. Facts & Figures (Top 10 markets for Arrivals, Overnights, Revenue / Top 10 target markets)
  13. Promotional Material (Posters, Brochures, Advertising Videos, etc.)
  14. Who to Contact (Tourism Authorities, Organisations, Associations etc. with contact names and emails)
  15. In a nutshell: Summary in bullet points.

All the material (texts and photos) will be provided by your organisation. There is no limitation in regard to number of words. The photos must be no less than 1000 pixels in width, preferably in landscape format. The videos must be .avi format.

In addition to the texts provided by your organisation, there is also the option of having one of our senior writers prepare a detailed original destination review with vivid descriptions of both mainstream and lesser known attractions of your destination.
