User-Preferred Routing trials for 38 flight routes in Asia-Pacific

User-Preferred Routing (UPR)

Air Navigation Service Providers and airlines in Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Singapore have launched UPR trials on 38 routes, paving the way for more efficient and sustainable air travel.

A significant stride towards more sustainable and efficient air travel has been taken in the Asia-Pacific region, with Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) from Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Singapore joining forces with national carriers Qantas, Air New Zealand, Garuda, and Singapore Airlines to launch User-Preferred Routing (UPR) trials. This groundbreaking initiative is currently being tested on 38 distinct flight routes, marking a pivotal shift in how airspace is utilized.

Empowering Pilots, Optimizing Flight Paths

The core principle of UPR is to grant pilots greater autonomy in flight path selection. Instead of adhering to rigid, predefined routes, pilots can now leverage real-time weather data and other factors to chart the most efficient course to their destination. This dynamic approach to navigation fosters optimized airspace usage, translates to shorter flight times, and crucially, results in a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

To illustrate the potential benefits, consider a flight between Singapore and Melbourne. With UPR, airlines can potentially conserve up to 1700kg of fuel per flight. When extrapolated to a year of daily flights on this route, the cumulative fuel savings are substantial, leading to a remarkable reduction of over 1960 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Collaborative Effort for a Sustainable Future

The ongoing UPR trials, slated to run for three months, represent a key component of the South-East Asia – Oceania Implementation of Free Route Operations (FRTO) Project agreement. This landmark agreement, inked on the sidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Air Navigation World Conference in Singapore in October 2023, brings together ANSPs from Indonesia, New Zealand, and Singapore, along with the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Airservices Australia has also joined this collaborative endeavor and is actively participating in the UPR trials.

Industry Leaders Voice Support

Key figures from the participating organizations have expressed their optimism and support for UPR. Mr. Han Kok Juan, Director-General of CAAS, lauded the collaborative spirit of the project, emphasizing how it showcases the potential for ANSPs to work in unison to achieve shared objectives such as efficient airspace utilization, carbon emission reduction, and shorter flight times.

Similarly, Mr. Rob Sharp, Interim CEO of Airservices Australia, highlighted the alignment of UPR with their environmental and sustainability strategy, which dovetails with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the global aviation sector by 2050.

Paving the Way for Expansion

The successful implementation of these UPR trials could herald a new era in air travel, with the potential for operationalizing UPR and extending its reach to encompass a wider network of cities and airlines. The positive outcomes of these trials could inspire other regions to adopt similar practices, accelerating the global aviation industry’s transition towards a more sustainable future.

The UPR trials currently underway in the Asia-Pacific region represent a significant leap forward in the quest for greener and more efficient air travel. By empowering pilots to make informed decisions about flight paths, the industry is taking concrete steps to minimize its environmental footprint. The potential benefits of UPR are undeniable, from reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions to shorter flight times and optimized airspace usage. As the trials progress, the aviation world watches with anticipation, hopeful that UPR will become a standard practice, ushering in a new era of sustainable aviation.
