Tempo Holidays has won the Best International Wholesaler award in the 2003 Australian National Travel Industry Awards for Excellence, announced in Adelaide on Saturday night.

The 14-year-old Melbourne-based travel wholesaler specialises in leisure travel to 27 countries, sold exclusively through travel agency networks. It is 100% owned by founders, Gary and Susan Hearst.

Chief Operating Officer, Simon Hills said Tempo Holidays had achieved all its business goals during the qualifying period.

We made significant measurable improvements across communication, service delivery, product standard and reliability, we added four new country destinations and a stand alone car hire product, we implemented a web browser-based booking/reservations system for agents, we broadened agency alliances and we seamlessly completed a name change, he said.

With all that going on, we were still able to increase revenue by 26%.

Mr Hills said the award was a significant industry acknowledgement for emerging businesses in a category traditionally dominated by major operators.

Tempo Holidays employs just 39 full time staff, located at the company-owned office, on Beach St., Port Melbourne, opposite Port Melbourne Yacht Club and Station Pier.

The company caters for the discerning FIT (free independent traveller) market which prefers individual holiday options to off-the-rack packaged itineraries.
