China-based Xiamen Airlines is planning to offer direct flights from Xiamen to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching in the near future, Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Paduka Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir said.

He said the proposal was made known to him during Xiamen Airlines Vice-President You Xianghui`s visit to his office Saturday.

In the meeting, they also brought good news on the success of direct flights from Xiamen to Kuala Lumpur, he said.

Currently, Xiamen Airlines offers three flights a week from Xiamen to the KL International Airport and will start the twice weekly Xiamen-Penang flights on Dec 3.

We also promise to cooperate with the company to ensure the success of the flights and in the long term, we hope they will increase their flights to this country, he said.

He said the addition of flights between the two countries was expected to increase the number of tourists from China, especially from Fujian, aside from providing opportunities for Malaysians to travel to the province.
