The World Tourism Organization (WTO) has followed with great dismay and sorrow the tragic events that affected Istanbul and all the Turkish nation last week, when a series of two terrorist attacks caused so many deaths and casualties.

The Secretary-General, Mr. Francesco Frangialli sent a letter to the Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mr. Erkan Mumcu on Friday, in which he expressed solidarity with the Turkish people and conveyed condolences to the families of the innocent victims.

The WTO has expressed on several occasions a strong and determined condemnation of terrorism and since the tragic events of September 11, 2001 has included issues relating to the impact of terrorism on tourism at the top of its agenda. Measures to overcome the negative effects of terrorist attacks and to restore confidence of the industry and of the travellers have been at the core of the work of the Tourism Recovery Committee, of which Turkey is an important member and active participant.

WTO is ready to offer any co-operation that may be required to support Turkey`s endeavours to tackle the effects of these tragic events, wrote WTO Secretary-General Mr. Francesco Frangialli in a letter to the Turkish minister.
