Agro-ecotourism is now booming in Thailand, with the number of visitors to the nation`s agricultural projects rising by 40,000 each year, according to secretary to the Department of Agriculture.

Mr. Pairot Suwanchinda said that the department`s programme to develop agricultural research and development facilities as tourism destinations had proved hugely successful among both Thai and foreign visitors.

Visitor numbers to the department`s 15 centres were now rising by around 40,000 each year, compared to an annual target figure of 15,000, he said.

The five most popular projects are all in the northern and north-eastern regions of the country.

The department is now planning to open two new tourist destinations in the southern province of Krabi and in the northern province of Chiang Mai.

Many of these projects are involved with high altitude crops although the Krabi project concerns rubber, and the new Chiang Mai project looks at rice farming. (TNA)
