UNWTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli strongly condemned the attacks against innocent tourists in Yemen, while visiting the Temple of Sheba on Monday 2 July. Earlier, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared that “no cause can justify such acts of indiscriminate violence against civilians”.

Mr Frangialli expressed the “deepest condolences on behalf of the Organization, its Members and the entire international tourism community to the families and friends of the victims and sincere hopes for the fast recovery of the wounded during the attack”.

Safety and security for tourists and travellers are high priorities for the work of UNWTO and were addressed during last weeks’ regional conference in Cairo, Egypt.

UNWTO is closely working together with its member States and the UN System to strengthen the capacity of countries to enhance the prevention and response in the area of safety and security.

The recent events in the UK underscore the continuing global importance of this issue, which specially affects the tourism sector.

UNWTO is committed to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, geared toward reducing poverty and fostering sustainable development. The Organization promotes responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, paying particular attention to the interests of developing countries. UNWTO is a specialized agency of the United Nations and the leading international organization in the field of tourism.
