tvsdesign chosen to design Wanda Nanchang Aquarium

Nanchang aquarium in Southeastern China will focus on “Jewels of the Pacific” meaning distinct and unique species from the Pacific Ocean. A geography-based progression of habitats aims to educate visitors on the wide range of aquatic life found in the Pacific Ocean.

ATLANTA – Atlanta-based architecture firm tvsdesign has been selected to design the Wanda Nanchang Aquarium in Nanchang, China.

Developer Dalian Wanda Group chose tvsdesign to create an aquarium that will become a premier attraction in southeastern China and be one of the most impressive modern aquariums in the world. The aquarium will be part of the theme park Nanchang Wanda Cultural Tourism City, that’s slated to have hotels, stages and other attractions for up to 50,000 people at a time.

The two-storey, 322,000-square-foot facility was designed behind a concept of complete immersion that strives to give visitors the sensation of actually visiting an underwater world. In addition to the various animal exhibits, the aquarium also will include a performance theater, a large, multi-function event space, and interactive environments that engage guests of all ages in unique and unexpected ways.

“It’s an honor to be involved in such an important landmark for the city of Nanchang,” said tvsdesign senior associate and architect Rob O’Keefe. “Our design will create an iconic aquarium which will be a symbol for the dynamic cultural center being created in this thriving and growing city.”

tvsdesign also designed the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, the world’s largest attraction of its kind. Bernie Marcus, Home Depot co-founder and benefactor of the Georgia Aquarium, told Georgia Trend he chose tvsdesign for his project because of the firm’s imagination and willingness to push the limits of traditional aquarium architecture.

That mindset already is influencing the design of the Wanda Nanchang Aquarium. tvsdesign has created a liquid architecture concept that brings to mind the rolling waves of the ocean and interior spaces that create a sensory experience with falling water passageways, 360 degree views of habitats and multi-media walls that engage visitors from every angle.
