The Thai government plans to promote agriculture research centres as tourist attractions and double the number of vsitors to them this year. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives hopes to attract more than 120,000 tourists to visit its 17 agriculture research centres across the country by the end of the year.

Agro-tourism is increasingly popular with Thai and foreign tourists, the Director-General of the Department of Agriculture, Chakun Saengruksawong, told TNA on Monday.

The number of visitors has been rising steadily in recent years, particularly during the cold season. Last year, more than 50,000 tourists visited the centres.

The department plans to promote its research centres close to the sea during the forthcoming summer season to attract visitors who want to escape from the cities` hot weather.

Centres in sea-side provinces of Chantaburi, Phuket, Krabi and Petchaburi are ready to each cater for as many as 300 tourists a day, he said. Those centres are shady and scenic, with rubber, fruit and herbal plantations, streams, and limestone mountains. Officials in the centres have been trained to serve both local and foreign tourists.
