Tetsuya Kobayashi, President of Imperial Hotel, Ltd., owners and operators of the 114 year old Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and the Imperial Hotel, Osaka, has announced the appointment of Takeshi Tsukamoto to the post of General Manager at the Tokyo Imperial, effective June 29th, 2004. Tsukamoto, a 34 year Imperial Hotel veteran, succeeds former General Manager Tetsuya Kobayashi who retains his earlier position as President of the company.
Tsukamoto, aged 57,joined Imperial Hotel, Ltd. 1970 upon graduation from the Faculty of Economics at Chiba University of Commerce. After extensive training in various departments, he was named Director of the Planning Department in 1992,and in 1997 was appointed Manager if the Rooms Division, followed by his appointment as Manager of the Banquet Division in 1999. Tsukamoto was elected to the board of directors in June of 2001. Tsukamoto will direct day-to-day operations at the legendary Tokyo landmark property, now in the process of a $ 155 million, 5 year long renovation which began in December of 2003.
The Imperial Hotel opened in 1890 as the nation`s first fully western-style hotel, backed by investments from the Imperial Household Agency, aristocrats and prominent commercial leaders in th Meiji Era. Its striking second generation building, opened in 1923, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and was replaced by the existing Main Building in 1970. The 31 story Imperial Tower, housing luxury retail space, restaurants, banquet and fitness facilities, offices and upper floor guestrooms, opened in 1983.
