Singapore Airlines (SIA) will soon be providing masks for all passengers and crew on flights departing from Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Taiwan and Kaohsiung.

While the provision of masks has not been stipulated by health authorities, SIA is taking this step in response to concerns expressed by passengers and crew about Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

SIA`s medical kits aboard all its aircraft contain a supply of masks that are intended for emergency use by doctors and crew who are attending to emergency cases on board.

In a related move, SIA is planning to step up the disinfection of its aircraft. This process involves cleaning all hard surfaces accessible to passengers, including armrests, tray tables, side panels, overhead bins and toilets, with an aircraft-specific disinfectant recommended by the World Health Organization. The cockpit and crew rest areas will be similarly disinfected.

This disinfection process is over and above current aircraft cleaning procedures.
