The Phuket Tourism Association is to launch a roadshow in the Japanese city of Osaka next year, riding on the back of the success of similar ventures in Australia, the association`s president Pattanaphong Ekwanich revealed.

Hailing the enormous success of the recent roadshows in Sydney and Melbourne, which had led to a huge increase in the number of Australian tourists visiting the southern resort island of Phuket, Mr. Pattanaphong said that the association now planned to conduct a similar event in Osaka at the beginning of next year.

Japanese tourists formed a substantial core of visitor arrivals to Phuket, he said, while noting that Thai Airways International Plc (THAI) had recently introduced direct flights between Phuket and Osaka, thus, facilitating travel.

Describing the Osaka market as an extremely important one, he said that it was necessary to meet with representatives of Osaka-based tour agencies to promote new tourism products.

While in the past, the association had spurned the idea of conducting roadshows in Japan due to the high costs involved, the association viewed the Japanese market as one with high potential.

Mr. Pattanaphong also expressed hope that Japanese tourists might in the future compensate for flagging tourist arrivals from Europe.

It was now necessary to boost non-European markets to keep Phuket`s tourism situation alive and healthy, he said.
