Viet Nam welcomed 1,155,427 foreign tourists in the first five months of this year, a 19.4 percent increase over the same period in 2003, according to the Viet Nam Tourism Administration (VTA).
Of the figure, 215,212 tourists arrived in May.
Chinese visitors counted 318,442, up 20.7 percent, followed by 119,152 arrivals from ASEAN countries, up 11 percent.
Next is the US with 117,528 visitors, up 22.5 percent.
The number of domestic travellers rose 19 percent to an estimated 6.5 million.
The VTA attributed the increases in the number of tourists to efforts of localities to upgrade existing tourist destinations and develop new ones. The tourism industry has also launched a Dien Bien Tourism Year, while the airlines operate more flights to popular destinations and advertise cut ticket prices.
