Skyrocketing global oil prices could have an impact on Thailand`s tourism situation by the end of the year, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) warned.
Mrs. Juthamas Siriwan said that although the oil crisis had yet to make a dent in Thailand`s tourism industry, an impact was likely if prices continued to rise to hit USD60 per barrel.
This would particularly effect the European, US and Japanese markets, she said, warning that the number of tourist arrivals in the country could drop by 350,000-400,000, causing a Bt1.4 billion loss in tourism revenue.
However, she stressed that the TAT would compensate for the loss by encouraging more tourists from short-haul destinations.
