Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Syed Razak Syed Zain reminded travel agents to refrain from over charging tourists visiting Langkawi during holidays.
Syed Razak said he had received a number of complaints from tourists that agents had charged high rates for accommodation and transport during the recent holidays which coincided with Labour Day, Prophet Muhammad`s Birthday and Wesak Day.
We do not want them to be involved in such practices as it will project a bad image and affect tourist arrivals on the Island, he said after attending the Leader with the People function in Kampung Kuala Temoyong.
There were reports that tourist arrival on Langkawi over the extended weekend holidays was beyond expectations which resulted in high demand for accommodation.
Many travel agents had taken advantage of the situation to hike prices for accommodation and transport.
Syed Razak said he had directed the State Executive Councillor for Culture, Arts and Tourism Nawawi Ahmad to conduct regular spot checks on hotels, chalets, shopping complexes, restaurants, business premises and on taxi stations.
