Malaysia, Pakistan to sign MoU on co-operation in tourism

Malaysia and Pakistan will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on co-operation in tourism soon, Tourism Minister Datuk Dr Leo Michael Toyad said here Monday.

The co-operation would be established between the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTC) and the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board (Tourism Malaysia), he told reporters before returning to Kuala Lumpur.

He had attended the closing of the National Water Month festival here last night by Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abang Haji Mohammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng.

Toyad said the MoU was a follow-up to the Dakar Declaration 2005 of OIC member countries to have more bilateral co-operation in various fields.

He said the co-operation in tourism would encompass research and development, training, promotional and publicity materials, meetings, conventions, travel mart/trade fairs and investment.

Tourism Malaysia had established an office in Karachi in May last year to promote Malaysia more effectively in Pakistan.

Last year, we had some 13,835 arrivals from Pakistan as compared to 9,484 in 2003. This is an increase of 45.9 per cent, Toyad said.

He also said that as of February this year, some 167 Pakistani citizens had participated in the Malaysia, My Second Home programme which allows foreign nationals — subject to certain criteria — to live in Malaysia on a social visit pass.
