The total number of mainland visitors in February soared to 471,528, an astonishing increase of 70.2 percent compared with the same month in 2001, according to the latest statistics released by the Hong Kong<.> Tourism Board recently.

At the same time, the total visitor arrivals in Hong Kong grew 15.3 percent.

HKTB said that the surge in the number of visitors from the mainland during the Lunar New Year period was boosted by the abolition of tour group quotas at the beginning of this year and a large increase in the number of mainland agents licensed to offer Hong Kong tours.

Arrivals from Taiwan also showed encouraging growth of 6.7 percent in February.

Taking January and February together, the total arrivals show 12.8 percent increase at 2,296,393, with the mainland remaining at the forefront.
