The past terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001 in New York and Washington and the recent airplane crashed have had a severe effect on the already troubled global travel and tourism industry. What lies ahead will heavily depend upon what will happen in the months to come.

The three main factors currently affecting the global tourism and travel industry are the decrease of consumer confidence in air travel safety, the feeling of uncertainty about the future, and the weakening of global economy. These factors have resulted a great financial loss in the travel and tourism industry across the globe, and Indonesia indeed is affected.

Although the global picture is bleak, the long – term outlook for travel and tourism demand is expected to brighten as consumer confidence about safety and security is expected to be covered. Let us quote Jean – Claude Baumgarten, President of WTTC<.>: In exceptional times we need exceptional measures to express the tourism Indonesia`s effort to restore confidence from it`s domestic and international stake holders.

In order to strengthen the on-going development of Indonesian tourism, especially in its effort to promote Indonesia to the International market, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism works together with the Indonesia Tourism Council, the regional tourism offices and industries. One of these integrated programs is attending the World Travel Mart 2001 stated by the Director General of Marketing and International Relations, Mr. Thamrin B. Bachri.

This year, located at the Asia Pacific Hall, stand number AS804/806, is represented by more than 30 industry shares from Bali, Jakarta and Bandung of West Java and by the regional tourism offices from Jakarta, Banten, West Java, East Java and Lombok.

Following to WTM, Indonesia will participate at the International Tourism Borse in Berlin and some other international conventions. As for the events to be held in Indonesia, we invite the international tourism community to participate the following events, namely: Asean Tourism Forum in Jogyakarta, January 2002, PATA ECOTOURISM 2002 IN Banten, the regular Travel Indonesia Mart in September 2002, PATA conference in Bali 2003, and many other programs for travel trade industry as well as for the media.

Tourism is considered important to contribute the economic growth in Indonesia, both through the support of investment as well as support of small scale industries in Indonesia.

The ministry of Culture and tourism reassures its commitment to the development tourism in Indonesia, one of which is to give its assurance on the effort to maintain safe and secure condition for tourists visiting Indonesia.
