India emerging as health tourism destination

With the revival of interest in complementary system of healthcare among the countries all over the world, India due to its rich bio-diversity has a fair chance to improve its socio-economic status, a Union Minister said here today.

Since the country was blessed with many efficacious systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Unani, Naturopathy, Yoga, Homeopathy and Siddha, it could open new vistas for health tourism and bring prosperity to the local population, Small Scale Industries Minister C P Thakur said at the `International Conference on Herbal Drugs and Health Tourism`.

A large number of patients from all over the world have started coming to India due to its complementary system of healthcare especially in the prevention and management of chronic lifestyle related to non-communicable diseases, he said.

Herbal drugs, which were non-narcotic and available at a low price here, were attracting health tourists from all over the world, he said adding it could be used to improve the socio-economic status of the country.

The Government besides creating National Medicinal Plants Board both at the Central and State levels has allocated adequate funds for drug discovery programmes, he said.
