InterContinental Hotels Group and SEDC (Sarawak Economic Development Corporation) entered an agreement for IHG to manage the Crowne Plaza Riverside Kuching and Holiday Inn Kuching on behalf of hotel owners SEDC. Under the new agreement, IHG will provide full management support as well as introduce product, service and operational enhancements, generating stronger returns for the hotels. Prior to this, the two hotels were operated by IHG under a franchise agreement.
Crowne Plaza Riverside Kuching is a 241-room upscale hotel and the adjacent 288-room Holiday Inn Kuching is the city’s mid-scale hotel and the only hotel located along the Sarawak River promenade. Following planned enhancements and refurbishment, both hotels are expected to appeal to a larger proportion of international business and leisure travellers, in line with Sarawak’s rising international profile for adventure travel, cultural activities and business conventions.
YB Datuk Haji Talib Zulpilip, chairman of SEDC, said: “We are pleased to continue our relationship with IHG and take full advantage of their proven hotel management expertise, brand equity and global distribution systems. As the state’s lead investor of tourism and leisure assets, SEDC continuously positions Sarawak as the destination of choice for both leisure tourism and events. This signing is a great reaffirmation of our partnership with IHG.”
IHG currently operates six hotels across Malaysia under the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn brands. As part of IHG’s continuing expansion in Malaysia, another Holiday Inn hotel will launch in Malacca in October 2007.
