Tourism has been one of the fastest growing industries in E-business. Hotels and airlines are the two key industry sectors that have embraced the growth in E-business. Many consumers find booking and making the purchase over the Internet convenient and efficient. Many suppliers, on the other hand, find the new mode of business attractive but not necessarily helping the bottom line.

The three speakers are Professor Pauline Sheldon, Interim Dean and Professor of Tourism at the School of Travel Industry Management, University of Hawaii; Dr. Roger Cater, a renown WTO Consultant in E-Tourism who established Tourism Enterprise and Management (TEAM) consultancy business in 1997 following a career at CEO level for the Heart of England Tourist Board and Edinburgh Tourist Board; and Mr. Tony Wheeler, co-founder of Lonely Planet tour guidebooks, which now has a very successful web site for travel-related information.
The speakers will discuss the impact and the future of E-business in hotel and tourism business from very different viewpoints. Tony Wheeler will offer his perspective of a practitioner in view of his involvement with ‘lonelyplanet.com.’ Roger Carter will focus on how e-business can be facilitated. Professor Sheldon will look at how hotels and travel agents can make better use of the opportunities. The symposium will appeal not only to academics, but also business people and the professional community.
The symposium, sponsored by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Hong Kong Hotels Association, Cathay Pacific Airways, Hotel Miramar Hong Kong and Hotel Asia Pacific, will take place on 9 October at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
