The Greek government is looking to strengthen ties with the country of India<.> in an effort to boost relations in the areas of tourism and other related fields. This was stated by Minister of Development Nikos Christodoulakis, who recently accompanied Prime Minister Costas Simitis, on an official trip to this Asian nation. Christodoulakis, who was speaking to reporters from New Delhi, said that some 30 million people from India visit the European Union every year and a significant number of these visitors can easily be steered towards Greece. The Minister noted that people from India are interested to learn more about Greece and its history, but up until recently could not do so for there existed significant barriers in the issuing of visas and travel permits. He said the creation of a tourist office in the area would certainly in the long-term secure tourism development to Greece from many Asian countries, especially from India. This would also aid travel to India from Greece as well, which has recently become quite popular, he added.
