Emirates<.>` Chairman, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, hosted a gala dinner in Mauritius on Thursday 5th September 2002, in celebration of the airline`s inauguration of services to the tropical Indian Ocean island.

The glittering social event in the capital, Port Louis, brought together nearly 500 guests from the country`s business and tourism community, plus members of the media.

Joining Sheikh Ahmed at table were (from left) the Rt Hon Sir Aneerood Jugnauth, Mauritius Prime Minister and Guest of Honour; the Hon Paul Berenger, Mauritius Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Finance; and Ghaith Al Ghaith, Emirates` Commercial Operations Director.

Emirates` senior management with them at the gala dinner included Nasser bin Kherbash, GM Middle East & Africa, Ali Mubarak Al Soori, Head of Chairman`s Office, Hans Haensel, Director Destination & Leisure Management; and Mike Simon, Director Corporate Communications.

Sheikh Ahmed said: We believe Mauritius will be an important route for us and our three flights a week will connect the island to Dubai and points beyond in the Middle East, Europe, the Indian subcontinent, the Far East and West Asia.

The start of air transport links between destinations is the start of a relationship between its people — in the business community, the leisure travel industry and in the air freight industry.

We look forward to developing this relationship with you for our mutual benefit and we are confident that Emirates` new services will help to promote your tourism industry further and provide the air links to more markets for your business community.

The night`s entertainment began with a hilarious, but thrilling rendition of Italian opera classics, served up by The Three Waiters. Headlining the evening was top soul singer Edwin Starr and his band, which kept guests on the dance floor till late.

Next morning, Friday 6th September, Sheikh Ahmed officially opened Emirates` new office in Port Louis, which is conveniently situated on the main thoroughfare, opposite the new Caudan Waterfront, a stylish shopping and entertainment centre, modelled on the waterfront in Cape Town.

Emirates flies three times a week, non-stop to Mauritius, operating an Airbus A330-200 aircraft in a two-cabin configuration, with 34 Business and 251 Economy Class seats.

Mauritius is the 60th destination on the Emirates network, which covers 42 countries on four continents. The network will be further expanded on 1st October, when the airline starts non-stop services to the Japanese city of Osaka.

Emirates is planning to start operations to North America next year, with the delivery of the long-range Airbus A340-500 aircraft.
