May 2002 results from 740 airports show cargo traffic rising 4 percent. However, passenger and movements were down 5 percent each. For the first five months of 2002, passenger traffic was down 6 percent, cargo 1 percent and movements 5 percent.
In May 2002, passenger traffic grew in the Middle East (+3 percent) and Asia/Pacific (+2 percent), but was down in the other regions: Latin America/Caribbean (-3 percent), Africa and Europe (-4 percent each), and North America (-8 percent). Beijing continues its double-digit growth rate (+16 percent) while most of the top 30 airports still record traffic declines. Notable exceptions are Tokyo Narita (+9 percent), Bangkok and Singapore (+4 percent each), Amsterdam and Hong Kong (+2 percent each) and London Heathrow (+1 percent).
Cargo volume handled rose in Asia/Pacific (+15 percent) and the Middle East (+9 percent). Cargo throughput was flat in Europe, but still negative in North America (-1 percent), Africa and Latin America/Caribbean (-4 percent each). Memphis has the distinction of being the world`s busiest and fastest growing cargo airport with a whopping 45 percent increase. Robust growths are also being reported by Hong Kong (+25 percent), Bangkok, Dubai and Shanghai Hongqia (+22 percent each), Tokyo Narita (+21 percent) and Taipei (+20 percent).
Aircraft movements were up slightly in Asia/Pacific (+2 percent) and Africa (+1 percent), but continued to decline in the Middle East (-3 percent), Latin America/Caribbean (-5 percent), North America (-6 percent) and Europe (-7 percent).
