The tourism sector is the main driving force behind many of world`s economies, representatives from Algeria, Slovakia and Greece asserted during workshops at Asia Forum 2000.

Greece is among the world`s top 20 destinations, the Greek Investment Centre`s Eleni Dessila told participants. She said that the tourism industry contributes 18.3% of Greece`s total GDP, noting that major works are being undertaken in view of Athens` hosting of the Olympics in 2004. She referred to the international airport at Spata, the Hellenic Railways Organisation`s 3.2-billion drachma investment programme that will improve rail links with Europe, and port upgrades.
