June 2000 results from over 620 airports worldwide show passenger traffic rising 7 percent and cargo 9 percent while movements remained unchanged compared with June 1999. For the first half of the year, passenger traffic was up 6 percent, cargo 9 percent and movements 2 percent.
In June 2000, passenger traffic growth was highest in Africa (+9 percent) followed closely by Asia/Pacific and Europe (+8 percent each) and the Middle East (+7 percent). Traffic was also up in North America (+6 percent) and Latin America/Caribbean (+3 percent). Atlanta-Hartsfield (7.5 million), Chicago-O`Hare (6.7 million) and Los Angeles (6.1 million) are the world`s busiest airports. Among the top 30 airports, seven registered double-digit growth rates: Madrid-Barajas (+25 percent), Hong Kong (+17 percent), Las Vegas and Seoul (+14 percent each), Rome (+13 percent), Minneapolis-St Paul (+12 percent) and Houston (+11 percent).
Cargo handled rose in Latin America/Caribbean (+16 percent) and Asia/Pacific (+15 percent). It was also up in North America (+8 percent), Europe (+6 percent) and Africa (+2 percent), but contracted in the Middle East (-2 percent). Federal Express hub Memphis, handling almost 214,000 metric tonnes of cargo, is the top cargo airport in the world, followed by Hong Kong (183,000 metric tonnes) and Los Angeles (176,000 metric tonnes). Among the top 30 airports, eleven registered double-digit growth rates: Sydney (+29 percent), Paris-CDG, Osaka-Kansai, Dubai (+20 percent each), Hong Kong (+19 percent), Taipei (+18 percent), Indianapolis, Seoul (+17 percent each), Singapore (+16 percent), New York-JFK (+13 percent) and Frankfurt (+11 percent).
Aircraft movements increased in Africa (+7 percent), Asia/Pacific (+5 percent), the Middle East (+4 percent), Europe (+1 percent) and Latin America/Caribbean (+1 percent). They were down in North America (-1 percent). Atlanta-Hartsfield continue to be the world`s busiest airport in terms of movements with almost 77,000 landings and take offs in June, followed by Chicago-O`Hare (75,000) and Dallas-Ft Worth (69,000).
