In August 2001, passenger traffic edged slightly upwards in all regions. It grew in Asia/Pacific and Latin America/Caribbean (+ 5 percent each), the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America (+3 percent each). Atlanta-Hartsfield (7.2 million), Chicago-O`Hare (7.1 million) and Los Angeles (6.5 million) are the world`s busiest airports. Among the top 30 airports, Beijing registered a 15 percent increase, followed by Chicago O`Hare and Madrid (+9 percent each) Houston Intercontinental (+8 percent) and Bangkok (+7 percent).
The drop in cargo volume handled in all regions continued. Double-digit declines were registered in Africa (-12 percent), North America (-11 percent) and Asia/Pacific and the Middle East (-10 percent each). Cargo was also down in Europe (-7 percent) and Latin America/Caribbean (-5 percent). World`s top cargo airport, Memphis, recorded a 4 percent increase with 230,000 metric tonnes handled. Other gainers in the otherwise slumping cargo traffic were Guangzhou (+6 percent), Dubai (+4 percent), Beijing and Indianapolis (+3 percent each).
Aircraft movements grew in Asia/Pacific (+4 percent) and Africa (+3 percent). They were flat in Europe and the Middle East and down in North America (-1 percent) and Latin America/Caribbean (-5 percent).
