In June 2001, passenger traffic rose in Asia/Pacific (+6 percent), Africa , Europe and Latin America/Caribbean (+4 percent each). It remained unchanged in the Middle East and contracted in North America (-1 percent). ). Atlanta-Hartsfield (7.3 million), Chicago-O`Hare (6.7 million) and Los Angeles (6 million) are the world`s busiest airports. Among the top 30 airports, Tokyo-Haneda registered a 10 percent increase, followed by Paris-CDG (+8 percent) and Rome-Fiumicino (+6 percent).
Cargo volume handled showed a slight increase in Africa (+1 percent) and was flat in the Middle East. It decreased dramatically in North America (-12 percent), Latin America/Caribbean and Asia/Pacific (-9 percent each) and Europe (-5 percent). The top 3 cargo airports, Memphis (198,000 metric tones), Los Angeles (182,000 metric tones) and Hong Kong (166,000 metric tones) showed declines just like the other 22 of the busiest 30 airports. Only four airports had recorded increases: Beijing, Miami, Dubai and Indiannapolis.
Aircraft movements grew in Africa (+5 percent) and Asia/Pacific (+1 percent). They were flat in Europe and declined in the Middle East and North America (-2 percent each) and in Latin America/Caribbean (-3 percent).
