Geneva, Switzerland: According to ACI<.>`s (Airports Council International) report, the tragic events of 11 September 2001 coupled with the worldwide economy slowdown, show airport traffic slumping to historical lows with passenger traffic down 15 percent, cargo 20 percent and aircraft movements 15 percent compared with September 2000. From January to September 2001, passenger traffic was up 1 percent, cargo down 8 percent and movements down 1 percent over the same period last year.

September 2001 results from over 700 airports worldwide show passenger traffic down in all regions. Hardest hit was North America with a 32 percent drop. Passenger traffic also dropped in Africa (-6 percent), the Middle East and Latin America/Caribbean (-4 percent each), Asia/Pacific and Europe (-3 percent each). Twenty-three of the top 30 airports saw their traffic drop dramatically. Among them: San Francisco (-38 percent); Dallas/Ft. Worth (-35 percent); and Chicago O`Hare (-34 percent). For the first time, Tokyo Haneda was the world`s busiest airport handling 5.2 million passengers (+3 percent) in September.

Double-digit drops in cargo volume handled were registered in North America (-29 percent), Latin America/Caribbean (-16 percent), Europe (-15 percent) and Asia/Pacific (-12 percent). Cargo traffic was also down in the Middle East (-7 percent), but remained flat in Africa. World`s top cargo airport, Memphis, recorded a 12 percent increase with 235,000 metric tonnes handled.
