Robust domestic passenger travels continued to stimulate the Indian market with year-on-year growth reached 17% in October, the highest level since January.
Hong Kong – In October, passenger traffic at Asia-Pacific and Middle Eastern airports grew +8.1% and +3.3% respectively compared to the same period last year.
Robust domestic passenger travels continued to stimulate the Indian market with year-on-year growth reached 17% in October, the highest level since January. The top 2 airports in the country, Delhi (DEL) +18.4% and Mumbai (BOM) +12.2% both registered the highest monthly growth rate thus far in 2017 reflecting strong demands in domestic and international passenger travels. Bangalore (BLR) came in third this month recorded an increase of +13.3%.
In China, the general pace of growth appeared to regain strength this month supported by solid domestic traffic growth. A number of airports also experienced sizable increase in international passenger growth, possibly benefited from vacation travels. The top three volume drivers were: Guangzhou (CAN) +8.3%, Shenzhen (SZX) +10.9% and Shanghai Pudong (PVG) +6.9%.
Airports in Southeast Asia also showed robust passenger growth this month, possibly benefited in part by vacation travels from the greater China area. Volume growth was led by Bangkok (BKK) +13.3%, Jakarta (CGK) +10.5% and Kuala Lumpur (KUL) +8.9%.
In the Middle East, passenger traffic continued to show mixed results in October. Passenger traffic growth at Dubai (DXB) was at +6.9%, its strongest since April. Doha (DOH) -14.3% continued to be negatively impacted by Qatar’s diplomatic crisis with a number of neighbouring states. Muscat (MCT) and Kuwait (KWI) were the bright spots in the Middle East this month reporting growth of +19.4% and +17.2% respectively.
In terms of air freight, Asia-Pacific and Middle East grew +2.6% and +1.3% respectively in October. Current month’s growth continued to be driven by strong demand in Asia-Pacific led by: Hong Kong (HKG) +2.3%, Shanghai (PVG) +7.3% and Seoul Incheon (ICN) -1.8%. The small decline at Seoul Incheon was due to the timing of a number of public holidays residing in the same week resulting in fewer working days in the month compared to last year.
