Thailand welcomes almost 30 million international tourists

During the 10-month period, Thailand earned 1.47 trillion baht in tourism income from overseas markets.

Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports Pongpanu Svetarundra said that Thailand welcomed over 28.8 million international visitors from January to October 2017. The number accounts for an increase of about 6.7 percent over the same period of 2016.

During the 10-month period, Thailand earned 1.47 trillion baht in tourism income from overseas markets. The value represents an increase of 9.3 percent over the same period of 2016. Combining the overseas and domestic markets, Thailand’s total tourism revenue from January to October 2017 amounted to more than two trillion baht.

The International Civil Aviation Organization in October 2017 removed the red flag against Thailand over safety concerns in its aviation sector. The removal has resulted in a lot of requests for more flights into Don Mueang International Airport, the second of Bangkok’s two main airports. It is also likely to boost tourism in Thailand, which has seen increased flight frequencies by both Thai and international airlines.

Meanwhile, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has launched a virtual reality “Discover Thainess” campaign to harness the power of new media and provide potential visitors with an authentic Thai local experience even before visiting the country.

Branded “Amazing Thailand VR,” the launch consists of three main narrative representations that give potential visitors insight into Thailand’s tourism products through advanced and interactive media. TAT expects that the Amazing Thailand VR will encourage more international tourists to visit the country, experiencing the culture first-hand for themselves.

The first experience features a journey into the ancient art of Muay Thai, the second one a rural Thai local experience weaving traditional Thai silk as passed down from generation to generation, and the third experience a story about the Thai culinary origins and Thai gastronomy tourism.
