ICYMI: Junior Chamber International and the State of Sarawak conclude International Summit on Peace in Kuching

Dozens of global figures and representatives of the world’s most influential organizations attended the International Summit on Peace on September 6th-8th, including former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and the Chief Minister of Sarawak.

Junior Chamber International (JCI) partnered with the State of Sarawak for the International Summit on Peace, which focused on peacemaking efforts around the world. The discussions at the Summit ultimately yielded an actionable Youth Proclamation on Peace, which includes seven commitments to peace for young active citizens in their communities.

Some of the Summit’s highlights include former Nigerian President Dr. Jonathan Goodluck, who during his political career sought to consolidate peace and cultivate democracy not only in Nigeria, but across all of Africa. He delivered the keynote address.

We must admit that conflicts are part of human society,” Dr. Jonathan said. “But what matters is our approach to resolving the conflicts as they arise, and ensure that they are not allowed to snowball into bloody clashes and wars.”

The Chief Minister of Sarawak emphasized that the Summit could not have come at a more crucial time as countless conflicts are intensifying around the world.

We are witnessing the spread of radicalism, nationalism and extremism and this International Summit on Peace is a welcome relief. You have chosen to unite here in Kuching to find sustainable solutions to these global challenges by exchanging ideas, and sharing experiences,” he said. “The Government of Sarawak joins you in this laudable effort to work, to consciously work towards building a peaceful world.”

Other top speakers included Sarawak’s Tourism Minister, MSNBC anchor Richard Lui, recording artist and former child soldier Emmanuel Jal and senior representation from Al Jazeera+, JICA, and peacemaking organizations around the world.

JCI has worked for over 100 years to bring young citizens together and show that with dialogue and hard work, anything is possible. The International Summit on Peace hopes to create a legacy of togetherness and propose innovative policies and methods which civil society can put into practice for world peace.
