Huangling opens third Shaiqiu Cultural Festival with short film competition

The Competition invites the public to dig deep into the village's historical and cultural heritage and tell the touching stories of Huangling and its people.

HUANGLING, China – China’s most beautiful country village, Huangling, has kicked off the third China (Huangling) Shaiqiu Cultural Festival, highlighting its unique local folk traditions and rich heritage through a series of performances and events, including the national “Huangling, Home of Shaiqiu” Short Film competition.

Run in partnership with vfilm.china.com.cn and the School of Culture and Communication of Huangshan University, the Competition invites the public to dig deep into the village’s historical and cultural heritage and tell the touching stories of Huangling and its people.

The Festival marks the 6th day of the 6th month on the Chinese lunar calendar, the “bathing and basking” festival, which is the peak season for the practice of shaiqiu. Hundreds of elegant Huizhou style houses are dotted across Huangling’s mountainous landscape. The villagers sun dry harvests and produces such as hot chili peppers, chrysanthemum flowers and pumpkin slices in bamboo baskets over roofs and racks to preserve the foods. This explosion against the majestic rural backdrop creates a uniquely stunning view that is unmatched anywhere else in China.

“Every sunrise, the elegant houses which have emerged over hundreds of years contrast with the colorful shaiqiu scene to reflect a morning glory that you can’t find anywhere else on the planet. The Festival is the best opportunity to enjoy this local phenomenon,” said Wu Xiangyang, CEO of Wuyuan Rural Culture Development Co., Ltd.

Established in 2014, the Festival has been dubbed “The Most Beautiful Symbol of China” by the Ministry of Culture.
