The Ryokan Collection welcomes The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Sengokuhara

Centered around the exquisite French and Italian cuisine for which the Hiramatsu company is renowned, the hotel offers a unique experience, with fabulous art, comfortable rooms and unsurpassed “omotenashi,” the ancient Japanese art of hospitality.

The Ryokan Collection is delighted to announce a new member of its group of fine ryokan – The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Sengokuhara.

The latest in the Hiramatsu Hotels group, Hiramatsu Sengokuhara opened on December 27, 2016, in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, a short trip by train from Tokyo. Centered around the exquisite French and Italian cuisine for which the Hiramatsu company is renowned, the hotel offers a unique experience, with fabulous art, comfortable rooms and unsurpassed “omotenashi,” the ancient Japanese art of hospitality.

The company has based its brand on the concept of a “European ryokan,” with comfortable rooms, artfully designed European-style interiors, locations in beautiful natural locations around Japan and excellent service. Thus, Hiramatsu Sengokuhara represents a new and appealing destination for discerning lovers of fine cuisine, art and luxury.

Hiroyuki Hiramatsu, Founder of Hiramatsu Inc., is a longtime aficionado of France, and spent several years there when he was developing his cooking skills. While there, he was impressed by the concept of the auberge – small, basic accommodations maintained by restaurants, to save their guests the trouble of making the long trip home after their meal. He decided to import the concept of the luxury auberge to Japan, to form the basis of the hotel brand, augmenting the company’s reputation as a leading purveyor of fine dining experiences at its 33 restaurants in Japan and overseas.

The main attraction at Hiramatsu Sengokuhara, as at all Hiramatsu locations, is its first-class cuisine. Both delicious and artistically presented, the food reflects the skills and sensibility of Chef Kenjiro Yoshikoshi, who takes his inspiration from the Hakone area and its abundant natural beauty. The emphasis is on appealing to all five senses, as well as on the local produce – ingredients available locally and seasonally in Hakone, and prepared with the skill and elan that is the hallmark of Hiramatsu Sengokuhara.

Enhancing the dining experience at Hiramatsu Sengokuhara is the fabulous art collection. This includes numerous works by some of the greatest artists of the 20th century – works Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, paintings by Lyonel Feininger and Sonia Delaunay, and many others – 100 works in all.

The artworks perfectly reflect the tone of the hotel – elegant, modern, European and endlessly fascinating.

The room interiors also perfectly reflect the hotel’s “European ryokan” concept. The style is spare but comfortable – a relaxed atmosphere, with art books to read, beautiful art to set the mood, and a big, beautiful marble stone bathtub facing the view over the rolling hills of Hakone. The baths are fed from local hot spring source, whose mineral-laden water is renowned for their beneficial effects on the skin and their ability to ease a variety of ailments, both physical and mental. The hotel has 11 rooms in total, most with views of Mt. Fuji, and all with a garden terrace.

Hiramatsu Sengokuhara’s location in the town of Hakone gives guests access to any number of attractions and activities. Hakone has been a destination for vacationers for centuries, and there is no end of things to do, including visiting the many world-class museums and historical sites, hiking in the mountains, or shopping for souvenirs.

Hiramatsu Sengokuhara is the third Hiramatsu property to join The Ryokan Collection’s group of member ryokan and small luxury Japanese hotels followed by Hiramatsu Kashikojima in Mie Prefecture and Hiramatsu Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture.
