Thomas Cook India's perspective on Monsoon Travel

Tatiana Rokou - 09 June 2017, 00:23

Thomas Cook India witnesses three-fold rise in monsoon travel.

Rajeev Kale, President & Country Head - Leisure Travel, MICE, Thomas Cook (India) Ltd stated about company's perspective on Monsoon Travel:

A three-fold rise in holiday bookings during the traditional ‘off season’ of June to September, rains do not act as a deterrent for travelers. 15% (year-on-year) rise in Domestic bookings.

Monsoon vacations offer a great value opportunity. This is a traditional off-season, and hence you can get avail of discounted rates and discounts of about 15% on package pricing. Travelers can also take advantage of special offers, and unique Monsoon destination/experiential packages offered by Thomas Cook India.

Thomas Cook India’s internal research has revealed that the onset of the monsoons have seen no slowdown in demand, with travel hungry Indian consumers leveraging the opportunity of great rates, where they save approximately 15-20% more on accommodation and food and air inclusive packages, compared to peak season rates. This trend is especially high with budget and value seeker travelers at both ends of the spectrum Gen Y as well as Gen S; equally so for solo travelers & ad-hoc group of friends; the working millennial segment powering the growth story.

With the development of new tourist circuits and improved rail and road connectivity to Tier II and Tier III cities, travelers are increasingly opting for domestic short haul locations for quick getaways.  While Goa, Kerala continue to trend as favorites, fresh new entrants emerging on the radar for monsoon getaways are Bekal & Hampi.

We are witnessing strong uptake for destinations like Goa, Kerala and hilly destinations in Karnataka, such as Ooty, Coorg, Kemmanagundi and Agumbe
.
The timeless beauty of the palm fringed beaches of Kovalam and Varkala, the majesty of the undulating hills of Munnar and Vagamon; equally the pristine backwaters of Kumarakom & Kuttanad and the enchanting woods and forests of Thekkady and Silent Valley are captured in our monsoon packages.

At Thomas Cook India, we are seeing an increasing preference for visiting new locales like Auroville in Pondicherry and the wine valleys of Nashik. Travellers especially from in and around Delhi are also considering short & drivable holidays to Manali, Dharamshala, Mcleodganj and Mussoorie. Ladakh is an eternal favorite this season, along with Mumbai & Maharashtra - Harishchandrachigadh, Rajmachi, Lohagad etc.

This year at Thomas Cook India, our Monsoon portfolio extends across exclusive popular locales and emerging destinations; so a combination of Goa, Nepal and Sri Lanka; and top monsoon destinations like Kerala, Maldives & The Andamans in the South; Ladakh, Himachal, Uttarakhand & Gujarat in the North; Orissa and West Bengal in the East, and strongly emerging destinations like Meghalaya & Sikkim in the North-east.

Thomas Cook India’s few favorite activities this monsoon :

  • Kerala's Periyar National Park remains open during the rainy season, unlike most other national parks in India
  • The snake boat races draw a lot of tourists to Kerala, as they are held during the monsoon
  • Apple picking season in Manali
  • Leh is preferred because the weather is the warmest between May and September and there is no rain, unlike other places, which makes it the perfect time to travel
  • The Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand, which has around 300 different varieties of flowers, is also popular among those who like hiking and exploring nature
  • Goa offers spectacular scenery and monsoon festivals to take part in. Luxurious holidays to Goa cost a small fortune during the peak season but is much more affordable during monsoons
  • Cherapunji, known as the wettest place on earth, is also popular because of the natural attractions.
