U.S.-based Cathay Pacific cabin crew join flight attendant union

Cathay Pacific operates multiple cabin crew units in the U.S., Canada, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangkok.

WASHINGTON – U.S.-based Cathay Pacific Airlines flight attendants joined the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA). In a union representation election, the National Mediation Board (NMB) announced that 97 percent of the voters elected AFA as their collective bargaining representative.

“We are so proud to welcome our sisters and brothers at Cathay Pacific who chose to join with AFA Flight Attendants around the world. Their Cathay Cabin Crew counterparts in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and Canada all have contracts with higher pay, benefits and job security. It’s past time for these hard-working U.S.-based Flight Attendants to have a contract that lifts up good American jobs. Cathay Pacific Cabin Crew will surely enrich AFA’s history that includes decades of Flight Attendants working together to raise the bar for our entire profession,” said AFA International President Sara Nelson.

Cathay Pacific is the flag carrier of Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific operates multiple cabin crew units in the U.S., Canada, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangkok. Cathay Pacific has daily flights out of LAX, SFO, JFK, BOS and ORD to Hong Kong. The company employs approximately 450 cabin crew in the U.S. with bases at SFO, LAX and JFK.

“U.S.-based Cathay Pacific Flight Attendants will now use the support and resources of AFA to negotiate a first contract with the improvements and protections they have rightfully earned,” added Nelson.

The Association of Flight Attendants is the Flight Attendant union. Focused 100 percent on Flight Attendant issues, AFA has been the leader in advancing the Flight Attendant profession for 71 years. Serving as the voice for Flight Attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill, AFA has transformed the Flight Attendant profession by raising wages, benefits and working conditions. Nearly 50,000 Flight Attendants come together to form AFA, part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO.
