Thailand International Jazz Conference

The TIJC festival takes place at five venues at Mahidol University: The Main Stage, The Oval Stage, Prince Mahidol Hall, Music Auditorium of College of Music (MACM) and Young Artist Music Program Building (Jazz Camp).

Thailand International Jazz Conference(TIJC) is the region’s top program for jazz performance and education, featuring leading Thai and world-renowned artists and more than 60 Jazz Big Bands and Jazz Combos gathering together to educate and entertain audiences at the College of Music, Mahidol University during January 27-29, 2017.

Associate Professor Dr. Sugree Charoencook, the Dean of College of Music, Mahidol University said, TIJC is the best model for jazz festival, admired for its quality of participating artists as well as the best quality of sounds and the unique atmosphere. TIJC has drawn tremendous amount of jazz fans and artists with the numbers increasing every year. Annually, during the last week of January, the jazz community across the country and abroad will come join the TIJC for musical performances, workshops and concerts by renowned local and international artists.

The TIJC festival takes place at five venues at Mahidol University: The Main Stage, The Oval Stage, Prince Mahidol Hall, Music Auditorium of College of Music (MACM) and Young Artist Music Program Building (Jazz Camp). This year, TIJC features concerts and workshops by the world-class leading jazz artists, including Donald Harrison, Julian Lage, Shai Maestro, and Magos Herrera.

Donald Harrison, the legendary saxophonist from New Orleans, achieved successes by thriving jazz scene in the 1980s. He was highly successful with the creation of his work in any form, from Mainstream Jazz to Fusion till Hip Hop as well as Nouveau Swing, the music genre that he invented. In TIJC 2017, not only he will perform in Jazz Quartet, but also he will perform his composition in symphony form with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO).

Julian Lage, a musician needs no much explanation to the guitar fans. He was a child prodigy who had joined the recording of the legendary Bluegrass, David Grisman at the age of 12 and worked with the leading Vibraphonist, Gary Burton at the age of 17.

Today, renowned Julian Lage at the age of 28, is the Jazz guitarist who has a huge fan base same as a pop star does. His latest album “Arclight” received a tremendous response from the jazz fans, critics, and musicians.

Shai Maestro, from Israel, the source of the world’s elite jazz musicians, is one of the best pianists in the world of modern jazz. His music represents the world modern jazz that seamlessly combines the form of melody, rhythm and complex harmony in the style of Israel Jazz. If you are interested in World Music or if you are a jazz or classical pianist, this would be different from the ordinary and it’s something that should not be missed.

Magos Herrera is a dazzling jazz singer-songwriter, regarded as one of the most expressive, beautiful voices and most active vocalists in the contemporary Latin American jazz scene. She is best known for her eloquent vocal improvisation and her singular bold style, which embraces elements of contemporary jazz with Latin American melodies.

Moreover, these world-class artists as mentioned, will also conduct workshops to share their skills, techniques and experiences in all musical aspects, including improvisation, accompaniment, and instrumental issues. For those who are interested, this is a very rare opportunity to see the performance and learn from the world-class musicians at the same event, only at TIJC!

We are honored to received grants in supporting artists of TIJC 2017 from the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok for Donald Harrison Quartet, from Embassy of Israel in Thailand for Shai Maestro Group and from the Embassy of Maxico in Thailand for Magos Herrera. We really appreciate your kind support for Thailand’s jazz community and education.

TIJC Camp this year, features workshop and masterclass from the Shai Maestro Group, presented by Shai Maestro (Piano), Desmond White (Bass) and Kush Abadey (Drum). Anyone interested can get to know how these world-class artists have studied, practiced and developed themselves as jazz musicians in their way, how their musical works have been created and what to be considered when improvising in various jazz styles. The knowledge and information gathered from the workshop will be applicable for all instrumentalists.

Furthermore, a highlight will be the co-performance between Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) and the legendary jazz artists and saxophonist, Donald Harrison, on Jan 28, 2017, 4 p.m. at the Prince Mahidol Hall. From morning till evening throughout the three days of the TIJC 2017, another highlight in the festival is Thai singers and musicians, who will specially attract festival goers wanting to have fun with their favorites. Among them are forever hit and entertainer Nop Ponchamni & The Groovetomatix-11, Jack Thammarat Duangsiri, Pomelo Town, Silpakorn University Jazz orchestra, RSU University Jazz orchestra, more than 60 Jazz Big bands from all around country and many more.
