GA Group expands to the outback

GA Group Managing Director Mark Davie today announced the contracts to purchase the luxury Crystalbrook Lodge and the surrounding 33,900ha Crystalbrook Station from long-time local partners John Morris and Jim Noli had been completed.

The GA Group is rapidly expanding its Tropical North Queensland portfolio to include the outback and the Great Barrier Reef along with its Cairns destination acquisitions.

GA Group Managing Director Mark Davie announced the contracts to purchase the luxury Crystalbrook Lodge and the surrounding 33,900ha Crystalbrook Station from long-time local partners John Morris and Jim Noli had been completed.

The deal also includes Mr Morris’ luxury Great Barrier Reef charter yacht MV Bahama based in Port Douglas. The Lodge and the Bahama are the core products of the high-end Crystalbrook Collection launched four years ago to offer intimate, authentic experiences of the outback and the Reef. Crystalbrook Lodge is also part of the exclusive Luxury Lodges of Australia.

This move comes on top of the GA Group’s acquisition of Rydges Tradewinds Hotel which will be redeveloped with a reef theme, and land at the corner of Aplin, Abbott and Lake streets to build a rainforest-themed twin tower hotel development. With construction due to begin early in 2017, these will be the first major hotel developments in the Cairns region for 20 years.

Prime Construction has played a key role in the GA Group’s Tropical North Queensland acquisitions. This has involved evaluating the sites, including feasibility studies and project planning, to bring each development to the point of a development application. Prime has also helped identify the many opportunities of enhancing the natural attributes of the Crystalbrook outback experience for visitors.

Mr Davie said he was delighted with the exciting opportunities presented by the acquisition of the Crystalbrook brand and the outback property which had the reputation of producing high quality Brangus cattle for the local and export market.

“We have looked carefully at a number of options and are confident we can create a range of uniquely Australian experiences with easy access for visitors through Cairns International Airport,” he said.

“Combined with the choice of a luxury Reef experience and our redeveloped signature hotels in Cairns we intend to make a major contribution in showcasing this magnificent region to the world.”

Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Alex de Waal has been closely engaged with the GA Group for more than a year during their evaluation of the region.

“The GA Group’s expansion into Tropical North Queensland represents a new and welcome era of investment for the destination on the back of strong visitor growth,” he said.
