The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) has welcomed the announcement by Qantas to provide direct air services between Perth and London.
Non-stop flights will commence from March 2018 with Boeing’s 787-9 Dreamliner to carry passengers between the UK and Australia.
“This announcement will deliver a significant boost to the West Australian economy which has been challenged in recent times by the slowing of the mining boom and an over-supply of rooms”, ATEC Managing Director, Peter Shelley said.
“The UK will now be a mere 17 hours away, changing up the age-old notion that Australia is a long-haul destination. This landmark announcement paves the way for future direct routes to Europe from Australia and is a great win for the WA region”, Mr Shelley said.
This announcement is not only good for WA jobs and the broader visitor economy, but it also presents a huge opportunity to stimulate demand in the youth market with working holiday makers now able to access Australia more easily.
“Direct UK-AU flights is an excellent partner to Tourism Australia’s youth campaign launched in London last month by Federal Tourism Minister, Steven Ciobo. We are excited to see what this will mean for working holiday maker numbers both in WA and across Australia.”
